Abstract

Those Tabanus species from Mexico and western North America with pilose eyes bearing a colored pattern in life, and distinguished from species of Hybomitra are reviewed. Two new species of Tabanus, Tabanus selvaticus Burger, Bermúdez & Bermúdez, n. sp. from Hidalgo and Tabanus sierrensis Burger, Bermúdez & Bermúdez, n. sp. from Durango, are described. Four species are transferred to Tabanus from Hybomitra: burgeri (Philip), n. comb.; howdeni (Philip), n. comb.; mimus (Philip), n. comb.; and zancla (Philip), n. comb. T. mimus is found to be a senior synonym of Hybomitra aitkeni Philip, n. syn. One species, laticornis Hine, is reassigned to Tabanus from Hybomitra, pending additional study. Species treated in this study are placed into four groups based on shared external features of adults, and of larvae and pupae when known. A key to adult females is provided for the species discussed.
